The Rose Window: -
25 feet in diameter,
displaying a representation of cherubim,
seraphim, virgins, virtues, powers, dominions, principalities and
thrones adoring the Lamb of God, which is a traditional Christian
figure for Jesus Christ. The stained glass was the gift of Mr and Mrs
Leonard Harper, the Cathedral Guild defraying the cost of the
stonework. The Mosaic panels in the centre of the arcading is the
figure of Christ in the act of benediction.
The remaining mosaics represent the six works of mercy, feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, hospitality to the stranger, clothing to the naked, and visiting the sick and prisoners (Matthew 25: 35-36). The panels are the work of Messrs Salviati and Co. of Venice. The centre panel is the gift of Mrs John Bealey, sister-in-law of Samuel Bealey, Third Superintendent of Canterbury. The second is the gift of the Hon. Spencer Lyttelton, the son of Lord Lyttelton, Chairman of the Canterbury Association. Canon Orange left a bequest, which was used to cover the cost of the remaining panels. The photograph was taken by Christchurch Photographer Derek Golding. Mr Golding is currently working towards creating the Vista Project, a world record attempt aiming to raise funds for Youthline in Christchurch. Using techniques devised for the Vista Project, Mr Golding photographed the Rose window hundreds of times through a powerful telephoto lens whilst standing atop a cherry picker parked in the center isle of the Cathedral. This position allowed for unprecedented access to the window resulting in detail normally only seen by a chosen few. More details of this technique can be seen on the Golding Arts website. |
